This revolver is referred to as the .44 Double Action Frontier, as it has the cylinder that measures 1-9/16" as opposed to the 1-7/16" of the .44 Russian. Given the popularity of the .44-40, that makes this a very popular Western revolver. The low serial number places the production of this revolver to approximately 1886 to 1887. Standard features include a 5" barrel, six shot, double action, .44-40 cartridge, nickel plated finish, with blued trigger guard, case colored hammer and trigger, and Smith & Wesson monogrammed hard rubber grips. This gun remains in fine condition. Barrel retains most of the original nickel finish on both sides of the rib on bottom, while the sides of the barrel are basically gun metal grey. The frame retains approximately 30-40% original nickel with the balance turned gun metal grey with some minor freckling. Cylinder retains approximately 40% original nickel with the balance flaked to a dark gun metal grey as well. The blued trigger guard has flashes of factory finish. Traces of color on hammer and trigger. Excellent original grips that fit flush to the metal. Lock up is perfect in both single and double action mode. Fine strong bore. Matching serial numbers on cylinder and release. Overall, a fine, tight, early Smith Frontier.
