The Model 1842 musket was the first regulation model of percussion ignition system weapon made at the National Armories. It was the last smooth bore weapon made in .69 caliber. This example was made at the Springfield Armory. Lock and barrel are dated 1853. Barrel breach is stamped "VP" with eagle head. Has three iron bands. Barrel measures 42". Walnut stocks are excellent with a perfect cartouche in oval on left side. Buttplate is stamped "U.S. 43A 16". Gun is all original. Wood still has the raised grain. All metal is in the white and is free of any pitting. Has the original ramrod, original nipple, and sling swivels. Near mint shiny bore. A nice example of a pre-Civil War martial musket that would be hard to improve upon.
