Beautifully oil-painted face with very detailed large blue eyes with white dot highlights, black outlined eye sockets and red eyelid line, dainty nose and mouth with outlined lips and curved corners in hint of a smile, painted short light brown brush-stroked hair with center part and shading highlights, rosy cheeks, closed mouth (tiny ding under left eye, bump on chin, 3/4” split on top of head, overall crazing to paint); cloth body with oil painted lower arms and legs; clothing is soiled and not original but appears to be an attempt to give her a “Moravian” look. “Maggie Bessie” dolls were hand made by the Pfohl sisters (Maggie and Bessie), two Moravian ladies in Old Salem, NC, beginning in 1893. Reference “The Pfohl Sisters and their Maggie Bessie Dolls” by Bradley Justice in November 2006 Antique Doll Collector magazine. Wonderful doll, very desirable and hard to find!
Condition: (Good).
