This is a Mississippi rifle. It was converted to a short rifle by cutting back both the barrel and stock. This alteration appears to be a period operation. Barrel measures 27-3/8", .54 caliber with a fine rifled bore. Stock has been shortened with 4" of wood remaining after rear brass barrel band. Sideplate has U.S. eagle stamp. All metal is a dark brown patina. "U.S." stamped brass buttplate with original rear brass barrel band and trigger guard. Sling swivels removed. Stock is very good with a 2" stress crack left side. Initials carved on bottom. Brass has never been cleaned. Has a crack from front bottom trigger guard to ramrod. Very common Civil War era conversion to handy carbine length.CORRECTION: Consignor states cartrdige is a 30-338 Wildcat. Should be chamber cast before firing.
