This is a standard Model 1878 Colt double action revolver chambered for the .45 long Colt cartridge, six shot, fluted cylinder, double action with a 7-1/2" barrel and factory nickel finish. It was manufactured in 1881 and is referred to by collectors as the "Fat Grip" as it has the early large grip frame. What makes this revolver historically significant is that it is stamped on the left side of frame "J.P. Lower" who operated a gun shop in Denver, Colorado from the 1870's through the turn of the century. Arguably, one of the most famous gun dealers of the Old West, supplying guns to some of the most notorious figures in the annals of Western history and folklore. His clients included Buffalo Bill Cody. The gun itself remains in excellent, all original, condition. Barrel retains approximately 40% original factory nickel with the balance a pleasing gun metal brown patina. The cylinder retains approximately 75% original factory nickel while the frame and straps retain approximately 80% original nickel. There are still traces of fire blue on the back of the hammer and trigger as well as some of the screws. Action locks up tight. Timing is perfect both single and double action. Bore is near mint. Grips are excellent with sharp checkering. A wonderful, totally honest big bore sent to a very famous dealer.CORRECTION: J.P. Lower stamp is not period. Gun does not letter to Lower.
