Listed in Muma's book, "Old Flyrod Lures, 2nd ed" page 77, as the Heddon Wilder-Dilg patent model, this 4" baitfeatures a hand cut, tin spinning tail, stamped PAT PEND and a large single hook. Bait consists of two sides, pinned together with a 1/4" piece of wood along the back, finished in gold, with indented eyes. Large single hook is held in place with a tin band and upon very careful disassembly, we find that it is marked W. Woodfield & Sons, a pre-1900 hook and needle manufacturer from Redditch, England. This is a fascinating bait, in all likelihood having nothing to dowith the 1927 patent #1582716 from BF Wilder of NY, NY. It is found in an unmarked wood slide top box measuring 6-1/2" x 3" x 1-1/4". Further research may turn up more information on this unknown bait, perhaps making it one of the all time greats!
