This rifle was manufactured by N.P. Ames in Springfield, Massachusetts. Manufactured 1841 to 1842. This navy model features .52 caliber, smooth bore, 35" round barrel with bayonet lug. Has brass mountings. all metal parts finish bright except barrel browned and lock is case hardened. Barrel is stamped "Wm. Jenks/ U.S.N. 1843", "R.P." inspector mark, and "P" proof. 1,000 rifles were manufactured for the Navy contract of 1841. This rifle was period sporterized by shortening the stock. It is cracks at the wrist and missing sideplate screw. Strong inspector stamps on right side of stock. Original nipple. Not working. Very good bore. Rare Naval rifle that would warrant restoration.
