These rifles were manufactured for the state of Massachusetts under direct contract and is so stamped on lock. They were manufactured 1863 to 1864 (this one dated 1863). Details are identical to a standard Model 1861. Features a 40" round barrel, .58 caliber percussion, standard folding military rear sight with original sling swivels and ramrod. All metal surfaces are a dark brown patina with light salt and pepper pitting on barrel. No visible cartouche. Original walnut stocks are very good, albeit there is a 3" crack on left side at front screw. Original nipple. Very good rifled bore with usual minor roughness. All proper U.S. stamped parts. Scarce Civil War contract rifled musket.
