This is an original rifle built during the period in a style that is popularly known as the "Gemmer" style or type. The basis of this rifle is an 1874 Sharps Sporting Model receiver that has been re-configured into a rifle profile similar to the Hawkin rifles of the 1850's. This rifle sports a 27-7/8" half octagon barrel with a decorative collar at breach and turn. The rear stock has a pistol grip with the bottom flare of an 1878 model with deluxe checkering, German nickel inlays on left and right and a German nickel plated crescent buttplate. The checkered forearm has a pewter tip and a barrel escutcheon. Rod retaining thimbles attached to barrel with an oak cleaning rod and sling swivels. Rifle also features double set triggers and a long range tang rear sight. Front and rear sights are standard sporting type. Barrel has no markings. Left side of frame is stamped "C. Sharps Patent September 12th, 1848". The letter "E" and numbers "61" and "2" are on the tang sight. The wood is in near mint beautiful condition. Barrel is a nice mix of blue-brown patina. Frame retains approximately 30-50% bright case colors as reapplied at time of conversion. Checkering is sharp as new. Bore is mint. Action is perfect. No caliber marking visible but bore measures to .40 and should be chamber cast to get an accurate measurement. Extremely lovely and high condition Gemmer style Sharps sporting rifle.
