.45-70 gov't caliber with a 22-1/2" barrel. This is a U.S. martial saddle ring carbine. Barrel has the "U.S. VP" stamp on barrel at breach. It was inspected by Henry Nettleton and is stamped "H.N." on bolt and frame. Inspector cartouche not visible on stock. Standard features on this gun include nickel plated forend tip, single barrel band, post front sight with military carbine rear, saddle ring on left side of stock and carbine buttplate. This fine Hotchkiss saddle ring carbine remains in resplendent condition. The barrel retains approximately 97% original factory blue with some light age freckling. The nosecap retains approximately 80% original nickel with some minor bubbling. Frame is a mix of blue soft patina. Bolt is polished. Even the buttplate and barrel band retain most of their original factory blue finish, as does trigger guard. Walnut stock is very good with a 1" line of grain separation right behind upper tang, and there is an expert repair on right side. The carbine rear sight is stamped "H.C.", so sight is proper to gun. Action works as new. Strong clean bore with some minor residue. Extremely fine early Indian War martially marked bolt action saddle ring carbine.
