.36 pinfire, barrel length is 5 3/4" LeFaucheux was one of the most productive of all French arsenals in the mid 19th century. There were probably more LeFaucheux pinfire revolvers in the hands of confederate troops during the Civil War than any other imported firearm. Amongst the most unusual and highly collectible LeFaucheux pinfires are those scarce examples that were manufactured with the high capacity cylinder. Offered is a fine condition, all original, such example. The cylinder has the12 round capacity. It features a double action mechanism with an extremely elongated hammer that reaches up and over the top of the 2-1/2" cylinder. The frame, as well as the cylinder flats, feature light scroll engraving, has 2 piece walnut stocks with lanyard ring and the left barrel flat is stamped "Invention LeFaucheux". A trade patent is also stamped in one cylinder flute. All metal surfaces are a gun metal gray patina with sharp barrel legend, the stocks are excellent with retaining a majority of the original finish, the cylinder indexes perfectly, bore exhibits usual black powder abrasion, front of barrel has the triangle front sight. While this was a very practical revolver for its time, it's highly unusual large capacity cylinder gives it an extremely curious appearance and is always a stand out when displayed next to any standard 5 or 6 shot revolver. While it is the Lemat that comes instantly to mind when referring to French hand guns used during the Civil War, these unusual firearms are fast gaining some notoriety.
