Barrel length is 36", caliber is .69. This is a model 1817 U.S. Flintlock rifle manufactured by H. Deringer of Philadelphia, Pa. under contract to the Government and is referred to as the Common Rifle. This is a smooth bore. Lock is dated 1841 at rear, center is stamped U.S. Deringer Phila. and it has the distinctive oval patch box on right side of stock. It is a typical conversion from flintlock to percussion. Features three barrel bands, sling swivels, brass tip rod and single leaf rear sight. Tang is stamped 1841, breech of barrel is inspector stamp M.W.P., metal is dark brown patina with pitting at nipple. Stock is very good but there is a large portion missing at top right tang with some chipping. Visible inspector marks on left side of stock but are not readable.
