4-3/4" barrel in .45 LC caliber. The Colt factory letter states that this revolver was shipped as a .45 Colt, 4-3/4", nickel finish, stocks not listed, to J.R. Caldwell care of E.C. Meacham Arms Co. St. Louis, October 27th, 1894 in a shipment of one gun. This gun is accompanied by numerous documents relating to Mr. John Rice Caldwell. His family were pioneers in Ohio and Indiana but moved to Missouri in 1849. During his lifetime, John was elected judge and eventually opened a bank in Kansas in 1887. He died in Savannah, Missouri in 1918. During its lifetime, this Colt had its nickel finish removed and the standard blued case colored finish applied or factory done. The back strap has traces of the blue finish present and the ejector rod housing has traces of blue in recesses and around front sight. Gun is basically a smooth grey-brown patina with sharp edges and legends. The muzzle shows holster wear. Original grips fit perfectly but are not numbered to gun. The only traces of nickel we can find are on the inside of gun. Perfect bore and action. Lovely Western shipped black powder Colt with positive identification.
