Model 1836 Hall breech loading carbine that was manufactured at the Harper's Ferry Armory, Virginia, between 1837 and 1840. The Harper's Ferry Armory made 2,020 Model 1836 Hall carbines between 1837 and 1840. Most of these carbines were intended for issue to the U.S. 2nd Dragoon regiment. The Model 1836 carbine has a distinctive 22" sliding angular bayonet located in a v-shaped groove below the smooth .64 caliber bore. Model 1836 carbines utilized some components from the Hall Model 1819 Flintlock rifles including the breechblock (this one dated 1834) with high fence rifle trigger guard that is not drilled for a sling swivel and off-set rear sight. The rifle has two pin-fastened iron barrel bands, a spur-shaped breech lever, and sling ring that consists of an eye-bolt, which passes entirely through the stock and is secured by a spanner nut on the right side of the stock wrist. This carbine has the later pattern stock which lacks the hinged implement box cover found on many Model 1836 carbines. The hammer lacks the hole below the spur found on most Model 1836 carbines. The breechblock is stamped J.H. Hall H. Ferry US 1834 and shows hints of original color but is basically brown patina mixed with gun metal grey, the bayonet is bright. The barrel, buttplate and furniture have approximately 85% arsenal applied lacquer brown finish. The stock is oil-finished walnut with no cracks but does have numerous dents and bruises having seen some service. Another interesting aspect of this carbine is that the front and rear sites are off set to allow a sighting plane and not blocked by the hammer. Perfect bore and action.
