40" barrel in .58 bore-percussion. This is a standard U.S. Springfield Model 1861 rifled musket that was made under Government contract by the Savage Arms Company. The barrel and lock are finished in the white and are in excellent condition with the typical age spotting. Barrel breech is dated 1863. Lock is stamped “Savage R.F.A. Co. Middletown, Connecticut” with the U.S. eagle and dated 1863. Standard features include three barrel bands (U.S. stamped), sling swivels, walnut stocks, and U.S. stamped buttplate. Stock is in excellent condition and is stamped “N.J.” for New Jersey militia. The left side of barrel flat is also stamped “N.J.” and also has the “V.P.” eagle head proof. Stock is in excellent condition with no cracks but usual minor dings. Rifling visible with usual black powder abrasions. Fine all original 1863 contract musket used by the New Jersey militia in far above average condition.
