.44 Colt caliber with an 8" barrel. Manufactured 1871. This revolver was converted at the Colt factory using the Richards Mason conversion system circa 1871 to 1873. Utilizing the basic standard parts of a Colt 1860 Army .44 caliber percussion revolver, these were converted to fire the .44 Colt cartridge with the bored through cylinder. Addition of a conversion ring and loading gate, and an added right side ejector rod, this is an excellent, all original, example of such a conversion. These were very popular in the old West and there were many more of these guns west of the Mississippi than the more popularized Colt Single Action. All metal surfaces are a smooth pleasing soft grey-brown patina. Has a brass trigger guard and iron back strap. Excellent pair of original varnished walnut grips. Cylinder scene not visible. Action tight as new. Very good strong bore with light black powder residue. Strong legend on barrel. Faint Colt legend on left side of frame. Wedge is slightly loose. Wonderful example of one of the more popular handguns used in the Western towns and frontiers of the 1870s.
