Barrel length 39", .80 bore flintlock. Produced by Barnett of London, this is a privately manufactured musket based on the Type 1 India Pattern of 1793, in original flintlock configuration. The lock is stamped "Barnett". Barrel has British proofs on left side. Features include a brown barrel, a one piece walnut stock, and three brass rod retaining tubes. The front two are trumpet style. It has the brass buttplate and trigger guard as well as forend cap. The sling swivels are missing from trigger bow and stock. Stock has the lines of a Brown Bess and is in excellent condition, and has the New York State Militia brand on the left side in a circle. Brass has never been cleaned and the barrel is a rich brown patina. In fully working condition. The New York State Militia were heavily involved in two of the four theaters during the War of 1812. That of the Niagara Frontier and the St. Lawrence River Valley. At the Battle of Buffalo, near Ft. George, 50 Americans were killed. Other famous battles in which the New York Militia were involved was along the American-Canada border, Lake Champlain, and the Battle of York. At the outbreak of the War of 1812, the United States military had less than 7,000 regulars. The majority of the battles fought in the War of 1812 were fought by state militias. And while the Battle of New Orleans is the one best remembered, the majority of the battles were fought in the upstate New York area.
