Springfield Armory introduced this tool as an attachment for the Model 1873 Trapdoor rifle where it was kept in use until it was pulled from service in 1890. Major Reno used this handy encampment tool during the Sioux and Cheyenne Campaigns with the 7th Cavalry where on June 25th, 1876 he sent a letter extolling the virtues of this important appendage. Another letter, dated September 1st, 1876 was sent from Colonel Miles of the 5th Cavalry who further reinforced the importance of this tool in the hands of his troops during the grueling Indian Campaign. The handle retains virtually all of the original blue finish with some light areas of rust, while the blade, finished in the white, has numerous age freckles. The tip is perfect. A somewhat scarce Indian Wars U.S. Trapdoor accessory.
