Referred to as the Model 1873 entrenching tool to provide the solider with a light weight, useful hand spade. This is a second type. The scabbard is leather stretched over brass and stamped U.S. on the upper left side. These tools were issued on request, but by 1883 virtually all were withdrawn from service. It has a 17 groove walnut handle and the scabbard has a saddle ring and bar. The leather sheath remains in near new condition. The handle is in excellent condition. The blade is very good with some usual age spots. The wooden handle is stamped U.S. Extremely difficult to find in this condition.
