.69 caliber, barrel length 42". This is a Type 2 musket that had a bolster conversion and is considered a contract arm. Lock is stamped "US M.T. Wickham" forward of hammer. This contract musket made by M.T. Wickham, Philadelphia, PA, produced approximately 16,000 weapons for the US. government. Rear of hammer is stamped "Phila. 1828". Top of barrel is stamped "H&P 1861". H&P was a company called Hughes & Phillips of Newark, NJ. They were contracted by the US government to do conversions in 1861 & 1862. This is a 2nd Type and 12,000 were altered. All metal surfaces were finished in the white. It has typical Springfield rear sight, three barrel bands, sling swivel on trigger guard bow and barrel band. Left side of barrel is stamped "NJ" for the New Jersey Militia. Butt plate is stamped "US". Walnut stock is very good with usual dings. Bore has been rifled with 3 lands.
