Caliber .45-70 government, Barrel length 32-5/8”. Offered is a fine condition, original Springfield 1879 trapdoor rifle. The breech block is stamped “US Model 1873” with no eagle head. The lock plate is stamped “US Springfield” with Eagle but no date. The breech block has the oval undercut, 1873 style rear sight, butt plate stamped “US”, both barrel bands stamped “U”, left side of stock has the “SWP 1884 cartouche (Sam Porter), left side of barrel has the verified “VP” proof with Eagle head. Rifle remains in excellent all original condition. The barrel and frame are a nice mix of blue and brown patina with some light age freckling. Traces of color on block with brilliant colors underneath and on tang. Wood is very good with no cracks, proud to metal, with usual dings. Action is perfect with a strong rifle bore with usual minor black powder abrasions. Rifle comes with an original bayonet, leather frog and US brass hanger.
