Manufactured in Amherst, Massachusetts (first production) 1867 to 1868. Standard features include a 28” barrel, chambered for the 16 gauge shot shell, has the variable choke threaded at muzzle, smooth bore, four shot carrier, no rear sight, exposed hammer, walnut stock, and smooth steel shotgun butt plate. 3” of barrel at breech are basically a blue-brown patina while the remainder retains 98% of a rich blue finish. Frame retains approximately 30% of the original case colors. Drum/magazine has turned a soft brown-gun metal grey. Majority of fire blue on hinge spring. Wood is excellent with no visible cracks or chips, just the usual hunting dings, and a little shy at toe. Probably period refinished. Clean shiny bore and perfect action. These shotguns are extremely rare and the first year Amherst’s in the 16 gauge are exceptionally rare. One of the finer examples you will come across.
