Caliber .38-40 WCF, Barrel length 24". Manufactured 1890. While outwardly this old Winchester is simply a standard rifle with the following features: full octagon barrel, full magazine, sporting sights, walnut stocks with rifle butt; this gun was once owned by famous wildlife artist David A Footer. The rifle comes with a letter from him listing the serial number with a picture of him holding the rifle. The letter states that he obtained the rifle from his father when he was 20 years old and used this rifle for hunting until he sold it years later. Footer is a world renowned naturalist. He has gained an international reputation for spectacular fish mounting and taxidermy. He received the Award of Merit from the state of Maine. His art has appeared on the cover of Maine Fish and Wildlife as well as the Canadian Eastern Woods and Waters. In 2002 he had a 13 page feature story in the Art of Angling Journal. Famed trapper and hunter from the north woods of Maine for over 70 years. As to the gun itself, it is a clean honest gun. All metal surfaces are a grey patina with light salt and pepper on right side. Stocks are very good with no cracks but were freshened up at one time and are a bit shy to metal. Action is perfect with a strong clean bore.
