40" barrel in .58 caliber. This is an interesting Model 1855. Made for the New Jersey militia and so stamped on the left side of the barrel. Private contract rifle. Rifle is stamped "Remington, Ilion, NY 1858 U.S.". Buttplate is stamped "U.S.". Top tang is stamped "1858 G". Left side of barrel has an "L.S." stamp with a touch mark and "S". Perfect cartouche on the left side of the stock. Has the Maynard tape primer system. Gun was finished in the white and is extremely clean with some usual age spotting. Near mint rifled bore. Wood is in excellent to near mint condition. This is an extremely rare Remington New Jersey militia contract Model 1855 rifle that has seen little to no use.
