Caliber .50-70 government, Barrel length 29-5/8”. Approximately 3,422 were manufactured from 1869-1876. They utilized the Allen patented conversion system with a mix of new and surplus Civil War parts. The Cadet rifle had a shorter barrel and no provisions for sling swivels. The plate is stamped “US Springfield” with Eagle and has the 1864 date. Left side of barrel and frame are numbered “1678”. Has the 1868 rear sight, block is stamped “1870” with Eagle head and “US”. Left side has ESA cartouche (partially readable). Left side is unit stamped “21”. Two barrel bands, both stamped “U”. There is a 1-1/2” hairline crack at left side of frame, otherwise wood is very good with usual bumps. Metal is a brown patina. Action is fine, bore has strong visible rifling with black powder abrasions. Nice example of early Cadet Trapdoor rifle.
