Caliber .58 percussion, Barrel length 40”. Approximately 11,495 riffles were manufactured by J. T. Hodge & A.M. Burton at the Trenton Locomotive and Machine Co, NJ, 1863-1864. Sometimes called state militia rifles because the left side of barrel is stamped “NJ” for New Jersey. Left side barrel also stamped “VP” verified proof and Eagle head. Top of barrel is stamped “1863”. Lock is stamped “U.S. Trenton” with American Eagle and dated 1864 (proper). All other features are standard as found on US Springfield Model 1861: butt plate stamped “US”, three barrel bands all stamped “US”, sling swivels, two leaf folding rear sight, cartouche oval on left side visible but not readable. Wood is excellent but has been freshened up, slightly shy at lower tang. Nice fire blue on barrel band retaining springs. Balance of metal is a brown patina with some scattered freckling and salt and pepper. Dark bore, perfect action. Comes with an original NJ plate leather cartridge pouch.
