2902 27” round barrel in .44 caliber percussion. These rifles were manufactured 1857 to 1864. It is a six shot, single action. Top of the frame is stamped “Colts Patent 1856” and address “Col. Colt Hartford, CT, USA”. No Colt records exist for this rifle, but it is a deluxe presentation model. Nickel plating is not listed in the book, but this gun was, at the very least, period dealer nickel plated and appears to be all original factory nickel. It is a deluxe full-plated gun in that every metal part is plated except the butt plate is brown patina. Has the deluxe highly figured checkered walnut stock with a few abrasions, proud to metal with no cracks. Small for-end with wedge. Barrel legend is sharp and there is no nickel plating within the legend. Special nickel plated folding long range peep sight on tang, sliding rear fold-down sight, and a nickel plated folding globe front sight. Overall the gun retains approximately 70% of the nickel plating with the balance flaked to soft gun metal brown patina with a light frosting. Frame is stamped “2902” with no nickel plating in the serial number. Hammer screw is a dull blue. Has original wooden ramrod with brass knob. Cylinder indexes perfectly. Strong, clean, near mint bore. This is the first of this type we have seen, the only plated deluxe in excellent all original condition with the deluxe wood. Very unusual and rare Colt.
