Abstract. Black ink on paper. 1950s. Unsigned. Franz Kline was born in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania. He studied in Boston and London before settling in Greenwich Village in New York. He did his first abstract painting in 1946 and subsequently was committed to executing abstract works for the rest of his career. His works are primarily in black over white images. He became one of the most important artists of the N.Y. abstract expressionist movement. Prices for Kline's paintings at auction reach into the multi millions individually and his small works on paper regularly bring up to one hundred thousand dollars.
