Serial No. 133734. Round 32-5/8” blued barrel secured by two steel barrel bands and marked with “VP (eagle’s head) P” and “A” on top, forward of breech block, .45-70 caliber rifled bore. Front bayonet lug-type sight, rear sight 1884 Buffington type. Sliding ramrod-bayonet. Casehardened tang and breech block marked “US MODEL 1884”. Lock plate marked “U.S. SPRINGFIELD” and stamped with eagle motif forward of hammer. Blued steel furniture, butt plate marked “US” on tang and has trap and compartment in butt for tools. Walnut stock with angled-corner cartouche dated “1891”. Stamped behind trigger guard tang with encircled stylized “P”. Very Good condition, barrel retains generous traces of blue, also visible around action and on furniture, but exposed areas of steel components mostly turned brown, scattered marks from use, markings very good. Stock with some minor nicks and scattered marks from use, worn cartouche. Bore is bright and excellent. A total of 65,000 were made between 1889 and 1893.
