This tumbling elephant is standing on all fours and is fully jointed. He is designed with a clockwork mechanism which allows him to tumble in somersaults when his arms are wound up. This mechanism has not been tested. He is made from grey mohair and has white felt tusks, which have discolored a bit over time. His early and period features include simple black shoebutton eyes and black claw stitching. This rarity was produced in 18 and 23 cm from 1909-1910 only; other Steiff tumblers include Teddy bears, Eskimos, clowns, and monkeys. The elephant version is the rarest of the tumbling animals, appearing for only two years in the line. Elephant retains her long “trailing F” style button as her Steiff ID. Condition: As noted. In clean, very good condition overall with wear and losses commensurate with age and nature of item. Provenance: From a fine Ohio collection.
Item Dimensions: 9 - 1/2" T.
