Round 40” barrel marked at breech “1862 VP (eagle’s head) F.C. STEEL) in .58 caliber. Front bayonet lug sight and replaced crudely made rear sight. Percussion lock, marked “U.S. COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT.” in center and “1862” on tail. Steel furniture with sling swivels, steel nose cap and butt plate tang stamped “US”. Walnut stock; replaced wooden ramrod. It is estimated that 75,000 were produced between 1861 and 1865 with many being sold on the civilian market and to state militias. Complete with bayonet marked “US” on 17” triangular blade, with leather scabbard and associated later brown leather sling. Fair condition. Steel components with pitted brown patina overall, especially at breech and on bolster, scattered areas of spotting, heavy pitting and scattered marks from use. Lock markings are good. Furniture with heavy patina. Ramrod replaced, missing barrel tang screw, two barrel bands and one lock screw improperly replaced. Stock good, but has been sanded and shows edge wear with scattered marks from use. Bayonet with spotted brown patina and areas of pitting, scabbard very good, some losses to finish and cracks, brass has dark patina.
