Round 40” barrel marked at breech “1863 VP (eagle’s head) STEEL”, in .58 caliber. Front bayonet lug sight and rear sight with two leaves. Percussion lock with eagle on bolster, marked “U.S. COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT.” in center and “1863” on tail. Steel furniture with sling swivels, steel nose cap and butt plate. Tang stamped “US”. Walnut stock with two cartouches behind rear lock screw on left side of stock. It is estimated that 75,000 were produced between 1861 and 1865 with many being sold on the civilian market and to state militias. Good condition. Steel components with pitted brown patina overall, markings good. Ramrod replaced, missing trigger guard screws and hammer screw. Stock very good with scattered marks from use.
