Caliber is .44 American, barrel length is 8". The cylinder, latch and barrel have mismatched numbers. Back strap is cut for a shoulder stock. It's unusual that the serial number on the butt can be part of second model. The walnut grips have been stippled, barrel legends are sharp, barrel release spring is weak, cylinder indexes perfectly. Strong rifling with usual black powder abrasion. Flashes of original blue but basically an all patina gun. Appears to have three kill marks on right side of frame and right side of barrel rib. These revolvers were manufactured from 1872-1874 and were very popular on the western frontier. They are considered the earliest large frame 44 calibers manufactured. Front sight has been replaced with what appears to be an old copper coin. Very colorful old west Smith & Wesson. Further research may shed light on the three digit serial number on the second model.
