Possibly an early 1794 contract, as it has no markings. Two-stage 42” barrel, probably French with bayonet stud 1-1/2” from muzzle in .72 caliber smoothbore. Flat unmarked lock plate with beveled edges, reinforced cock. All internal lock components marked with two punched dots, however, lock has been reconverted. Unmarked steel furniture of the early U.S. military style, but somewhat heavier. Full length partially figured walnut stock is unmarked, steel ramrod. Seepages 126 through 132 of American Military Shoulder Arms: Volume II by George D. Moller, which states that many of the early 1794 Contract muskets were unmarked and unproofed, as they were made by many different makers and often used a variety of parts. Very good condition with steel surfaces showing dark brown patina with scattered spotting. Stock is very good with minor marks from use and a few small age cracks and one 6 inch crack from underside of forend to first barrel band.
