Round 40” barrel in .58 caliber smoothbore. Breech stamped “VP” over eagle’s head. Rectangular front sight and bayonet lug, rear sight with two leaves. Percussion lock marked with eagle motif forward of hammer and stamped “U.S. WATERTOWN” and “1864” on tail. Steel furniture including three barrel bands, sling swivels, nose cap, trigger guard, and butt plate tang marked “US”. Walnut stock with steel ramrod. Good condition. Barrel with brown patina and pitting around breech, lock good, bolster and surrounding area with pitting, markings good. Stock good, but has been sanded and refinished, scattered marks from use. Furniture with brown patina and some scattered light pitting. This contract was made by Charles B. Hoard in Watertown, New York. There were 12,800 made between 1863 and 1865.
