Round 42” barrel with bayonet stud near muzzle in .69 caliber. This is a fine example of a rare and historic Model 1816 Type III musket by rare Philadelphia, PA contractor M.T. Wickham. Wickham produced 8,450 total Model 1816 muskets and only 1,200 in 1831. Lock flat with beveled edges and tamped “US” above “M.T. WICKHAM” in a horizontal arc in center of lock, surface of lock plate rounded behind convex reinforced cock and marked on tail “PHILA/1831”, brass pan. Walnut stock is full length and has initials “MF” carved into right side of buttstock. Cartouche behind side plate, steel ramrod. Steel furniture typical of the Model 1816. Side plate stamped with small “S” and butt plate stamped “US” on top. Complete with Model 1816 bayonet stamped “US AW” near top of 16” blade. Very good condition, all steel components have been cleaned and retain bright surfaces with scattered dark spotting. Lock markings are good, original flintlock configuration. Stock excellent, scattered marks from use. Bayonet excellent markings, spotted dark brown patina. See pages 424 through 435 of American Military Shoulder Arms: Volume II by George D. Moller for information and similar examples.
