This oil painting, Portrait of a Lady, was painted by George Romney. This English painter has the sitter in a wooden chair and looking to the viewer. She dons a white dress with ruffles with a black shawl. On her neckline, there is a brooch with the initials ES. Behind her is a red velvet cloth that is draped towards the right half of the canvas, which was typical of that time period in portraits. Farther in the background is a landscape with trees, bushes, and a blue sky with clouds. The plaque at the base of the frame reads: Portrait if a Lady George Romney 1734-1802. The painting, including the frame, is 31-1/4 x 36 inches. The frame has wear to it, along with missing parts of the wood, chips and fading of the gold paint. The oil painting has craquelure present.
