Prodigious, extraordinary, uncommon are just a few words that describe these early dolls from the 1680 – 1700 time period. Most unique in appearance with sculptured facial details these dolls rarely come to the market and if they do become available they usually have substantial restoration. This example Vera mentioned that she purchased it at a Sotheby`s sale either in the 1970`s or early 1980`s for £50,000. A paper tag pinned within the dress indicates that the doll came from Paris, either auction or private purchase, in May of 1957. It describes the doll as being 17th century but re-costumed in the 18th century. It appears that black light inspection as well as viewing with a magnifier the facial painting is predominately original. The red lips have been enhanced, a couple of cheek scuffs with amateur touch up, and heavier paint enhancement to the shoulder plate most of which is obscured by the clothing. Most likely the gesso flaked on the shoulder plate necessitating some restoration to this area. The human hair wig has most likely also has been replaced at a later point in time. Overall an exceedingly rare doll with great appeal.
