Marked on blade by maker "J.D. Chevalier, New York". Circa 1835. This was one of the more prominent American Bowie makers of the period, and his knives are highly sought by collectors today. German silver mounts on knife and scabbard. Two piece ivory slab scales on each side decorated with eight inlaid German silver studs on each side. Ornate stamped and filed cross guard. Beautifully mellowed ivory grips. Beautiful wide swedge to one side of blade. The blade is in fine condition with very, very minor pitting. It has been carefully polished and the markings are clear. Top of blade is bent. Nice scabbard with ornate German silver mounts.
