Circa 1815 to 1830. OL: 61”. BL: 45 - 1/2”. TB: Octagonal. LM: Flintlock. Original. PB: 4-piece. S: Curly Maple. 24 brass inlays. This signed “John Bear” rifle made in York County is still in its original flintlock condition. The rest of the rifle also survives in excellent condition. All of the brass hardware and inlays are fully engraved with the major elements of brass hardware showing sophisticated engraving. Some of the ornamental inlays have a simpler form of engraving but still enhance the rifle’s overall appearance. The carved “gadrooning” in front of the lock and the very fine basket-weave wrist carving show a skilled hand. There is a strong similarity of workmanship to Melchoir Fordney. J. Bear was odviously influenced by his work. The rifle’s stock surface has an old mellow re-finish.
KENTUCKY RIFLE.
