Circa 1810 to 1825. OL: 56 - 3/4". BL: 42". TB: Octagonal. LM: Flintlock. PB: 4-piece. S: Curly Maple. Ten silver inlays and three brass inlays. This Kentucky is signed in black letters "John Marborger" and is from Eastern Pennsylvania based on its styling and architecture. The good curly maple stock is highly covered with brass work that is covered by shallow delicate engraving. In addition to the exotic flamboyance of the patchbox and its pierced finial, the decorative toe-plate runs to within one half inch of the rear of the trigger guard. In addition, the brass comb-plate runs the entire length up to the wrist. There is also a buttplate inlay on the cheekpiece which runs from heel to toe. Underneath the cheekpiece is a large, brass inlay which is scalloped and also scrolled on each end. The silver inlay on the cheek piece is profiled within a pierced oval, and the rear barrel keys have a "spread-wing eagle" inlay with a silver inlaid center. The entire rifle's stock has a mellow original patina and the only repairs are two "iron-strips" overlaid on a break beside the trigger guard and beneath the re-converted flintlock. These "iron-strips" do not detract from this rifle as they are "in-period" repairs and enhance the overall integrity of this rifle, simply showing its usage and value to its owner.
