Smoothbore octagonal barrel, unsigned with centered rear sight. Reconverted flintlock mechanism, lockplate with rounded tang, stamped "M.M. MASLIN/WARRANTED", rounded tail and roller frizzen, probably replaced/second lock. Pin fastened plain sheet brass furniture, including two-piece patchbox, large vacant oval wrist escutcheon, half moon with face above cheekpiece, "S"-shaped inlays on each side of wrist and ovoid inlay in front of toeplate. Brass wear plate engraved with Allentown type "Indian" head forward of trigger guard. Flat sideplate matching contour of carving around lock. Partially figured full-length maple stock with familiar Lehigh form with open ended brass nosecap. Good condition, barrel with scattered areas of pitting and dark brown patina. Lock with dark patina and some pitting, some surface rust, reconverted. Brass mostly mellow or unpolished with scattered marks from use. Stock with some chipping along barrel and some small losses around lock, scattered marks from use.
This rifle was probably made in the area around Allentown, Pennsylvania, as it has architecture like many made in this area. However, this maker, known for the "S" shaped brass inlays on each side of the wrist, has not been identified as there are no known signed examples.
