Jacob Schaffer silver-hilted cavalry saber. The pommel is in a dome with a small capstan rivet. The second piece of the pommel has engraved lines. The slightly P-shaped knuckle bow expands in width as it reaches the cross guard. There are five hallmarks of “J S” in script in an oval on the bottom of the quillon in front of the spine of the blade stamped in the shape of a cross. The ferrule at the bottom matches that of the pommel. The ebony grip is reeded diagonally on the sides and vertically at the rear. The curved blade stamped “ROSE” has a shallow large single fuller and broadens toward the tip. The black scabbard is leather-bodied with large decorated silver mounts. The top mount has a shield engraved at the top along with an extension of long leaves, stud and carrying ring. The center mount features an engraved tree with two pinwheels at the top as well as a stud and ring. The bottom mount has the floral decorations sweeping upward with tulips at the bottom. All of the mounts are sculptured. Hilt: 5”. Total: 37”. Copy of "American Silver-Hilted Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords by Daniel Hartzler", featuring this sword will be included. Sword is featured on page 95, figure 91. Excellent condition; blade retains a highly polished surface with some light rust at top, near guard. Scabbard excellent with some flaking and crazing, mounts are excellent. Grip, guard and hilt are excellent.
