This early silver-plated animal-head pommel was made in one piece. It has a stem capstan, and the back of the head come down further into the grip than the portion under the chin. It is lightly engraved in nice detail. The ears are reminiscent of those normally found on lions-head pommels. A stud in the animal’s mouth secures a double chain guard that is anchored to the back of the cross quillion. Both chains are made of links that have been turned back on one another. A tall ferrule at the bottom holds the walnut grip, which is wrapped very tightly with silver wire. The English type blade is slightly curved with a single fuller along the spine. It was originally blued just past the midsection, but is now brown. Hilt: 5-1/2. Total: 32”. Copy of "American Silver-Hilted Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords by Daniel Hartzler", featuring this sword will be included. Sword is featured on page 697, figure 626. Excellent condition, hilt retains about 90% silver finish and shows little wear. Grip excellent with a few very minor chips around pommel. Blade retains a grey and brown patina with some scattered marks.
