John McMullin’s nicely formed small-beak eagle silver-hilt sword with a doorknob capstan rivet. Forehead molding consists of two lines. The eyes are well set. The feathers are rounded with a center vein and the bottom of the pommel matches the area between the beak and the forehead. The heavy guard is well formed, with a series of round cutouts in the knuckle bow that flow into the counter guard. Counter guard has three spokes on each side and is marked “I. McMullins” on top in a rectangular cartouche in large and small letters. The ivory grip is nicely checkered, bordered with two columns on each edge. Slightly curved blade has a shallow fuller, with a cartouche on the obverse featuring an eagle and indistinguishable initials. The brown leather scabbard has a top mount with a very heavy oval frog button and is engraved “J M” on the upper obverse in script. The tooled lines can be found on both sides of the brown leather scabbard. Hilt: 5-1/4”. Total: 34-1/4”. Copy of "American Silver-Hilted Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords by Daniel Hartzler", featuring this sword will be included. Sword is featured on page 65, figure 52. Excellent condition; blade retains a dark grey patina with some edge wear from scabbard and some light pitting. Scabbard very good with replaced drag and some scuffing and creases, last 6" replaced and all stitching is gone on back. Hilt excellent and grip shows dark yellow patina with some age cracks.
