Identical saber from the shop of John Janvier Sr. can be seen in "American Silver-Hilted Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords by Daniel Hartzler" on page 137, figure 131. The only difference being that this piece was made with a scabbard keeper and languettes. Same .084" thick knuckle bow. The bulged ivory grips are checkered on both sides with the reverse having double lines. Imported curved gold washed and blued blade made for the American market. Blade is etched with “U S of A” and military motifs. Black leather bodied scabbard with large mounts. Hilt: 5-7/8”. Total: 37-3/4”. Copy of "American Silver-Hilted Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords by Daniel Hartzler" featuring this sword will be included. Sword is featured on page 137, figure 132. Very good condition; blade retains a heavy brown patina, some small areas of pitting and some nicks on edge. Traces of gilt on engraved designs. Hilt very good with some wear and scratches. Grip retains a yellow patina with some minor hairline cracks from age and some wear to decoration. Scabbard very good with some flaking, one repair done very well in center, replaced drag and stitching is missing.
