Two stage smoothbore barrel with thick walls, flat flintlock lockplate, brass furniture, sideplate engraved with scrolls, otherwise plain furniture. Full length partially figured maple stock of typical York County, Pennsylvania form, relief carved bell flowers on each side of wrist. Panel around comb. Relief design around ramrod entry ferrule and relief panels around lock and sideplate terminating in teardrops at the rear. Relief carved flowers and scrolls around barrel tang and large C scrolls on left side of buttstock. Fine relief molding carved on each side of buttstock at bottom. Very good condition; barrel retains a brown patina with some heavier dark patina. Lock appears to be original flint and retains a heavy dark brown patina. Ramrod entry ferrule and front trigger guard finial have been repaired. Stock is very good with carving behind entry ferrule and around barrel tang showing some wear, otherwise sharp. About 15-1/2" of the forend have been professionally replaced towards the muzzle. The repair was done very well and is hard to see. One small sliver of wood has also been replaced above the lock between lockplate and barrel tang. Very good overall with some scattered marks from use. Jacob Altland was a well-known York County, Pennsylvania maker who worked in the Golden Age. His carving ins reminiscent of Frederick Sell and shows Maryland influence.
