Slightly curved three-fullered Spanish type steel blade, fitted at top with leather washer. Brass hilt with solid guard and two branches on right side extending into solid counterguard, which is attached to olive-shaped pommel in the center. Integral capstan. Spiral-turned cherry grip with deep flutes and deeply engraved lines where wire once highlighted spirals, brass ferrules at both ends. Good condition; blade has been cleaned and has some areas with surface rust and some damage to edge. Hilt retains an old coat of black paint, some areas chipped off and retain a very dark patina on brass. Grip is good with a few age cracks and minor chips. For a similar example, see Plate 344.S on page 176 of "Swords and Blades of The American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. This example has a nearly identical hilt.
