An exceedingly fine Office Secretary desk of the standard grade variety, produced by The Wooten Desk Co. around 1874. This desk is constructed of a variety of woods, including a beautiful burl veneer. During the height of their popularity these desks were mainly found in the offices of successful men, such as the likes of President Ulysses S. Grant and John D. Rockefeller. The doors or "wings" of this desk open to reveal a fold-out writing surface lined in green felt, drawers, filing boxes and a multitude of pigeonholes. Some cracking is evident in the veneer of the curved cabinet front. General wear commensurate with age and use is present, however, this desk is in impeccable condition for being 140+ years old. Inside the desk were found a newspaper clipping about Wooten desks circa 1995 and a pamphlet from The Oakland Museum and Indiana State Museum from an exhibition on Wooten Patent Desks held during the 1980's.
