Circa mid to late 1830's. Upswept, relief ground clip point blade with sharpened false edge and silver plated ricasso, blade lightly stamped, upside down, “LUTH..” for John Luther of Cincinnati, OH. Frame handle fabricated from iron and silver plated, ivory scales with iron pins and raised silver washers on each side, silver escutcheon on obverse scratched “Hewitt”. Original sheath constructed with cloth lining, internal wood supporting spine, decoratively stamped thin leather over cloth over pasteboard, neatly fabricated tin tip. The blade dark with tarnish over sharpening scratches, a few small nicks in edge. Scales with a few stains, scratches etc., the plating worn on the high points. The sheath is somewhat battered, missing throat and most of supporting sheath under it, tip a replacement. Ex. John Bates, Mike Worley collections. John Luther was a German-born maker of scissors, surgical instruments and general cutlery, and is now becoming recognized as one of the early bowie knife makers. Only a few of Luther’s knives are presently known.
